Nitrous Oxide

At Kids R Us in Southwest Calgary, we offer nitrous oxide sedation for nervous, anxious or special needs children.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation For Kids

At Kids R Us Dentistry, we may recommend nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, as a sedation option to help your child relax during their dental treatment. You may have guessed from the name, that nitrous oxide is a blend of two gases: oxygen and nitrous oxide.

If recommended as a sedation option for your child, we will administer Nitrous oxide/oxygen through a small breathing mask, placed over the child’s nose to help them relax, without putting them to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as a safe, effective sedation technique when treating children.

The gas is easily inhaled with normal breathing, and it is quickly eliminated from the body. It is also non-addictive. While inhaling nitrous oxide (laughing gas), your child remains fully conscious and with all of their natural reflexes. Before the end of the appointment, we will administer 100% oxygen to help reverse any effects of the nitrous oxide.

Prior To Appointment:

Please inform us of any changes to your child’s health and or any respiratory conditions that will make breathing through their nose difficult for your child as this may limit the effectiveness of the nitrous oxide. We recommend your child refrains from eating at least 3 hours before their appointment. Only water and other clear liquids can be taken 2 hours prior. Lastly, please inform us of any medications your child is taking on the day of the appointment.

  • It affects patients’ sense of time, making appointments seem shorter, further reducing stress and anxiety.
  • The gas mask, which limits patients’ view of surroundings or dental instruments that may increase anxiety, contributes to the calming effect.
  • It is very important to have no solid foods up to 3 hours before the appointment to decrease tummy upset and increase effectiveness of sedation.
